The Emergency Department Secretary/Technician is responsible for performing a variety of direct and non-direct patient care duties, including routine patient care duties, as well as clerical, supply, and messenger responsibilities. The Emergency Department Secretary/Technician also performs other patient care related duties and unit duties as needed.
Junior or senior nursing students and physician assistant students are encouraged to apply.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to the Nurse Manager, Emergency Department and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Essential Functions-Perform patient care related duties and clinical functions as assigned or requested.
-These include, but are not limited to, taking vital signs, performing EKGs, monitoring oxygen saturation, perform skin care and simple dressing functions, collecting specimens, bathing and performing other sanitary needs of patients, transferring and assisting with ambulation of patients, feeding patients, etc.
-Perform glucose monitoring and bladder scans and report results to RNs.
-Assist RNs and physicians with other exams and treatments as required.
-Communicate with nursing staff in an effective and timely manner around issues related to patient care and patient condition.
-Ensure that appropriate stock items, supplies, and equipment are available to the Unit based on volume, established par levels and clinical needs; order and maintain Unit supplies and equipment as needs indicate.
-Ensure that patient rooms are stocked, equipped and cleaned appropriately, as needs indicate and as patient volumes change.
-Report equipment malfunctions and needs to Maintenance or Bio Medical Engineering as appropriate.
-Complete documentation data on the patient's medical records as care is provided, condition changes, and as clinical needs or supervisor indicates.
-Monitor patients requiring one to one observation reporting change(s) in conditions and needs, and care as supervisor indicates.
-Transport patients as needed to other Departments for treatment and/or arrange for other resources to do so as needs indicate.
-Participate in quality improvement processes and systems to assure targeted outcomes, exceptional service delivery and efficiency.
-Demonstrate cooperative, collaborative, participative behavior with peers in the performance of work, goals, quality improvement efforts and patient care delivery.

Qualifications

* High school diploma or equivalent required

* Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association required

* De-escalation training required within 180 days of hire

* Ability to perform routine patient care activities under the direction of licensed nursing personnel requiring technical or on the job training such as phlebotomy, oxygen application, and ambulation, etc. required. These skills are typically acquired through the completion of a certified nursing assistant, EMT, or medical assistant program

* Demonstrated competency in nursing assistant skills checklist by end of orientation period required

* Six (6) months to one (1) year nursing assistant experience, and/or other clinical assistant experience preferred

* Ability to multi-task and handle stress crisis situations effectively required
