Job Summary:



The Laboratory of Translational Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Neuroscience, is seeking an entry-level research professional to join their growing team of researchers using mouse models and cutting-edge techniques to probe the biological mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders and driving the transmission of intergenerational stress. This is a great opportunity for recent graduates looking to expand their laboratory experience!

The lab is directed by Drs. Tracy L. Bale and Scott M. Thompson, who bring decades of experience in dissecting the molecular underpinnings of neurodevelopmental disorders and psychiatric disease to identify novel biomarkers and pharmacotherapies for targeted interventions that improve mental health.

Entry-level technicians provide support services to manage day-to-day operations of the lab, facilitating research, managing transgenic mouse colonies, genotyping/PCR, and aiding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in experiments and data collection, sample processing, assays and procedures. Examples of techniques used include cell culture, Western blot, DNA/RNA isolation, qPCR/PCR, electrophysiology, immunohistology and microscopy, transcardial perfusions, mouse dissection, and animal (mouse) behavior assessments and manipulation.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects.
  • Participate in supervised research experiments as needed, including assisting with mouse surgery, dissections, tissue collection and processing, behavior studies, molecular procedures, and data analysis.
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results.
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, prepping solutions, updating laboratory inventory records, etc.
  • Provide animal care related to research studies and in colony management including breeding, weaning, and genotyping of transgenic colonies and triple transgenic crosses.
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as needed.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:



  • A bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience, psychology, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.


A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with rodent colony maintenance.
  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques including safety procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Detail-oriented and organized in record keeping.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $46,274 - $50,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
