Job Description

Do you thrive in high-pressure situations and want to be the calm in the storm? As a Safety Communications Operator with MUPD, you'll be the vital link between the campus community and emergency response - answering the University Emergency line, dispatching officers, monitoring alarms and surveillance, and keeping campus safe through rapid communication and multitasking expertise.

What You'll Do

  • Answer multi-line emergency and non-emergency phones
  • Act as the university's after-hours emergency switchboard
  • Gather and prioritize information for emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Operate a multi-channel police radio console to dispatch personnel to incidents
  • Use Computer Aided Dispatch and MULES systems to enter and retrieve criminal justice data
  • Track officer duty status and maintain daily police activity logs
  • Monitor alarm systems and security cameras for University buildings
  • Greet walk-in customers and provide front-desk support
  • Generate daily incident reports and distribute records to campus units, courts, and the public
  • Provide reports to community members and collect fees for reports and fingerprinting
  • Prepare administrative reports and work orders
  • Proofread and file departmental reports and records
  • Maintain up-to-date call routing lists and dispatch reference materials
  • May assist in training new communication operators
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Shift

Full-time (40 hours/week)

Schedule: Sunday through Saturday

Shift times vary and may include nights, weekends, and holidays

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma and two years of experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MULES Certification
  • APCO Communications Training Certification
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $18.80 - $25.00/hour

Grade: GGS-006

Selection Process

  • Initial screening and referral of applicants by Human Resource Services
  • Departmental screening of applications
  • Selection Board Interview
  • Background Investigation - includes verification of credentials, review of criminal record, and three personal references
  • Computer Voice Stress Analysis (if deemed necessary by the Director of Police)
  • Final interview with the Director of Police
