The State Highway Administration's (SHA) District 4 - Baltimore County is currently recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician I (HEMT I) position. Please only apply if you are willing to work in the Owings Mills Maintenance Facility. The eligible list produced from this recruitment will be utilized to fill HEMT I vacancies within SHA in the specified county only.

Nature of Work: The HEMT I will perform journey level of repair and maintenance on motor vehicles and diesel-powered equipment. This position will perform routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment and assist in performing major repairs and overhauls on vehicles and heavy equipment. This includes diesel powered, electronic computerized, and fuel injected equipment.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One and one-half (1.5) years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment.

Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Completion of an accredited training program for heavy equipment or diesel repair may be substituted for one and one-half years of the general experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet education or experience minimum qualifications.)

5. Certification as a Master Technician in one or more subject areas by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.


Licenses & Certifications

1. Employees are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.

All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.

2. Employees are required to obtain and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the state of Maryland during the probationary period, depending on the type of equipment operated.

3. Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.

4. Employees must satisfy the first level of the employing administration's certification program during the probationary period. Failure to satisfy the first level of qualifications within the stated time will be considered grounds for dismissal.

5. Employees new to the Maryland Aviation Administration, must obtain an MAA Airfield Operators Permit in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulation 11.03.01.04, Control of Vehicular Traffic on the Air Operations Area prior to permanent appointment.

6. Employees who are required to function in the capacity of Commercial Vehicle Inspector may be required to obtain and maintain their Commercial Vehicle Inspector's License.



Additional Information

1. Employees must be available for duty at such hours, day, or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility.

2. Employees are subject to being on-call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.

3. Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and have the ability to wear a respirator.

4. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

5. Employees in these classifications are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
