Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Program Manager to lead the infrastructure core of the University of New Mexico's Prevention Research Center (UNM PRC), which is part of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. . This role is essential in ensuring the smooth operation and administration of a federally and state-funded center that supports multiple research and program projects through grants and contracts.

The UNM PRC is dedicated to addressing the health promotion and disease prevention needs of New Mexico communities through participatory, science-based research, as well as collaboration, training, dissemination, and evaluation activities. This position serves as the bridge between the Department of Pediatrics, the division, and other Health Sciences Center (HSC) departments, ensuring seamless communication and coordination across multiple stakeholders. This is a critical leadership position that plays a vital role in the success of the UNM PRC by ensuring operational efficiency and fostering collaboration across departments and funding agencies.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Oversee operational planning, establishment, execution, and evaluation of a complex, multifaceted program.
  • Manage communication between the PRC division/center and major funding agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH), and NM Human Services Division (HSD).
  • Work closely with Principal Investigators (PIs), the Scientific Research Manager, and various UNM Health Sciences administrative offices, including financial services and legal counsel.
  • Supervise two or more administrative staff and manage both restricted and non-restricted accounts.
  • Ensure effective coordination among diverse teams of researchers, faculty, and administrative personnel.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience 2 of which are management level experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Capable of managing multiple tasks while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • A proactive problem solver who can meet deadlines and follow through on key responsibilities.


  • Experience preparing financial reports, statements and projections for restricted and unrestricted accounts as required and needed.
  • Experience overseeing administrative functions including supervising and mentoring staff and student employees.
  • Experience assisting numerous Principal Investigator's in the management of grants and contracts including projecting, monitoring, reporting expenditures related to project budgets and maintaining tracking and timelines, reporting, reapplications and other requirements
  • Experience and expertise in analyzing and interpreting data in the management of the projections and financial information
  • Experience working with pre-award staff in the UNM Fiscal Department
  • Experience in monitoring and maintaining ledgers of accounts for the financial management systems (i.e. Banner, MyReports, CHROME, Pinnacle, LoboWeb, Kronos) for quality assurance and supervisor approvals
  • Experience in providing budget development and on-going fiscal and administrative support for submission of new grant and contract funding opportunities
