Department Summary

As a department within Student Affairs, the University of North Texas at Dallas Counseling & Wellness Center offers services to all enrolled students. The UNT Dallas Counseling & Wellness Center provides short-term individual counseling, group counseling, wellness programming, crisis intervention, and case management services. The UNT Dallas Counseling & Wellness Center offers a holistic approach to providing services to students, and is committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and confirming environment for all.

Position Overview

The counselor's primary responsibility is to provide psychotherapy to all students at UNT Dallas, with a particular focus on supporting STEM students. These services include comprehensive psychological assessment, diagnosis utilizing the DSM-5-TR, crisis intervention, short-term individual and group psychotherapy, and referrals to community providers.

In addition, the counselor actively collaborates with other members of the Counseling and Wellness staff to develop and deliver psychoeducational programming and outreach services for the student population. The counselor may also provide consultation to faculty, staff, and student leaders as directed by the Director and (or) Assistant Director of Counseling and Wellness Services. Some evening and Saturday availability is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Clinical or Educational Psychology or related field. Must be licensed by the State of Texas or have the ability to obtain appropriate licensure within twenty-four months of employment.

  • Knowledge of professional counseling practices, policies, and procedures

  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience in a university setting.
  • Experience with assessing and treating dual diagnosis clients.
  • Experience providing crisis intervention, treatment for alcohol/drug use and eating disorders.
  • Excellent assessment skills and an ability to relate to a diverse student population.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.


Required License/Registration/Certifications

Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Clinical or Educational Psychology, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or a related mental health field.

Must hold an active Texas license or be eligible to obtain licensure within 24 months of employment in one of the following:



  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC or LPC-A)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW or LMSW in clinical supervision)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT or LMFT-A)
  • Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA)


Job Duties:



  • Conduct crisis intervention, psychological assessment, and diagnosis using DSM-5-TR criteria for students seeking counseling services.
  • Provide short-term individual and group psychotherapy utilizing evidence-based intervention models appropriate for a university counseling center student population.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans for psychotherapy based on clinical assessment and student needs.
  • Facilitate psychoeducational workshops and outreach programming focused on student development, mental health, and overall psychological well-being.
  • Manage referrals for mental health treatment and coordinate care with community providers as appropriate. - (Essential)
  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and up-to-date clinical documentation in compliance with professional and ethical standards.
  • Provide consultation to faculty, staff, and student leaders regarding student mental health concerns and campus well-being initiatives as directed by the Assistant Director of Counseling and Wellness Services.
  • Adhere to professional standards, ethical guidelines, and licensure requirements as established by the respect licenses field (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, LPA , etc.) with the state of Texas and higher education regulatory standards.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training to enhance clinical skills and maintain licensure.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Weekdays: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., occasional evening and Saturday
