Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

As the Plans Examiner, you will review residential, commercial, and other construction plans to ensure completeness, accuracy, and conformance to applicable building codes, ordinances, national standards, and zoning regulations. In addition, you will perform a variety of duties involved in providing customer information and assistance related to the development process, including but not limited to planning, building, zoning, code enforcement, drainage review, and maintaining records using the County's automated permitting system and computerized geographic information system.

We Require

  • Three years of experience in architectural, residential, or commercial building plan review or building inspections, which includes reading and interpreting commercial and residential construction plans and specifications

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Post-secondary education in Architecture, Landscape architecture, Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

  • Post-secondary education in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field

  • Experience in conducting research, analyzing problems and issues related to land-use controls

  • Experience in customer services

  • Building Assignment: International Code Council (ICC) certification, certification from the International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) or International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI)

Job Contributions

  • Review residential and commercial permit plans for compliance with the zoning ordinance; some drainage and septic review compliance required

  • Provide preliminary plan review to assist the public in preparing applications for plan review submittal

  • Provide accurate written and verbal communications related to submitted plan review documents, required corrections, permit procedures, and status of plan reviews; recommend solutions to problems, etc.

  • Interpret ordinances, regulations, and codes to provide information and technical assistance to the public, co-workers, and other agencies

  • Provide information, training, and technical expertise to other staff members

  • Maintain prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance for assisting the customers as a public-facing department

  • Monitor the status of problem permits; perform follow-up on projects as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • Exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions

Machines, tools, equipment, software, and hardware

  • Laptop computers using Accela Automation permit software, Bluebeam, Outlook, On-Base, Q-Matic, Microsoft Office Suite, and telephone
