The Role
The Engineering Director, Solution Owner plays a crucial role in both client engagement delivery and practice development. This role is 60% billable, serving as a Senior Solution Owner across multiple product squads, ensuring technical and business alignment, while also supporting the Director/Senior Director in building, scaling, and operationalizing the SO practice. As a player-coach (ability to flex the capacity based on the needs), this role is expected to lead by example, demonstrating best-in-class SO behaviors in client engagements while also contributing to the hiring, development, and performance management of Solution Owners within the organization. The individual in this role must be an exceptional stakeholder manager, able to set expectations, hold teams accountable, and push back with respect and professionalism. This role is ideal for a seasoned Solution Owner who wants to expand their leadership impact beyond client delivery while still staying close to execution.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Client Engagement & Solution Ownership (60% Billable Work):
- Serve as a Senior Solution Owner in client engagements, leading multiple product squads and ensuring alignment with business goals.
- Act as the trusted bridge between client product leadership, technical teams, and consulting leadership.
- Drive outcome-focused product delivery, ensuring value realization and timely execution.
- Manage prioritization, backlog refinement, and Agile delivery across multiple squads.
- Resolve ambiguities, competing priorities, and stakeholder conflicts
- Coach and mentor Solution Owners within client engagements, ensuring best practices are followed.
Practice Development & Operations:
- Support the Director/Senior Director in defining and implementing standards, playbooks, and best practices for the SO function.
- Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and talent retention efforts within the SO organization.
- Develop training and coaching programs to upskill Solution Owners, focusing on stakeholder management, expectation setting, and accountability.
- Monitor and measure Solution Owner performance on client engagements, identifying areas for improvement.
- Assist in capacity planning and resource management for SO deployments across engagements.
Stakeholder Collaboration & Evangelism:
- Work cross-functionally with digital delivery leadership, account teams, and pre-sales teams to elevate the understanding of the SO role.
- Partner with sales and delivery leads to ensure SOs are engaged in the right places to drive successful outcomes.
- Advocate for SO best practices both internally and externally, demonstrating the value of structured product ownership in consulting engagements.
- Provide feedback and insights to continuously refine SO role expectations and strategic direction.
Required Skills and Professional Experience:
Client Delivery & Agile Leadership
- Proven experience as a Senior Solution Owner or Product Owner in a consulting, technology, or digital delivery organization.
- Deep expertise in Agile methodologies, including Scrum, SAFe, and Lean practices.
- Ability to balance multiple squads and product workstreams, ensuring consistency and delivery excellence.
Stakeholder & Communication Excellence
- Strong ability to set expectations, hold stakeholders accountable, and push back diplomatically.
- Exceptional communication and influence skills, capable of aligning diverse teams across business and technology.
- Experience managing cross-functional collaboration, including product, engineering, and executive leadership.
Coaching & People Leadership
- Experience mentoring and developing junior Solution Owners in both engagement and organizational settings.
- Passion for talent development, hiring, and building high-performing teams.
- Ability to deliver coaching and training sessions (1-on-1 and group settings) to enhance SO competencies.
Practice Operations & Growth
- Experience in standardizing SO processes, frameworks, and best practices.
- Comfort with metrics-driven performance management, tracking success across engagements.
- Ability to work in a high-growth, matrixed consulting environment, balancing billable work with practice development.
Preferred Experience
- 10+ years of experience in Solution Ownership, Product Ownership, or related roles, with at least 4+ years at a senior level.
- Experience in consulting, digital transformation, or technology delivery organizations.
- Proven ability to manage multiple squads within large-scale client engagements.
- Strong understanding of product development lifecycles, Agile frameworks, and stakeholder engagement best practices.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business, Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred).
- Agile certifications (CSPO, SAFe, PMI-ACP, or similar) are a plus.
