Associate Sonographer

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Associate Sonographer works under the administrative direction of the Radiology Director and Manager, and under the clinical direction and guidance of the Radiologist and Ultrasound Supervisor. The Associate Sonographer trains in a variety of routine, complex and highly technical procedures that require independent judgement, ingenuity and initiative in the application of nonionizing, high frequency ultrasonic waves to humans for diagnosis of disease.

This position assumes responsibility for designated areas as needed including stocking rooms, checking expirations, quality assurance, etc. The Associate Sonographer must be registry eligible by the ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers). Associate Sonographer must maintain required duties in the other modalities trained in such as: call responsibilities, weekend and holiday rotations, and other duties as needed. Associate Sonographer works in conjunction with a registered sonographer meeting CMS vascular requirements. RVT is required before eligible to take ultrasound call and to work independently off hours.

EDUCATION:

High school graduate or equivalent, graduate of an approved CAHEA/JRCT school of Radiologic Technology, or a two year allied health equivalent. Must be registry eligible for ARDMS certification (registration).

Manual dexterity and ability to manipulate an ultrasound transducer with either hand are extremely helpful. Stronger interpersonal skills are critical since the individual must interact frequently with patients, physicians, and other sonographers. A personality that embraces change is critical since changes to procedures and instrumentation occur frequently. Above all, the person must be goal oriented rather than process oriented and should be focused on adapting work procedures to achieve goals of quality patient care, personal growth, and increased productivity by any means possible. The individual must also be a team player.

Must have knowledge of the physical principles of Diagnostic Ultrasound and how to apply them to obtain diagnostic quality ultrasound images. Must have an in-depth knowledge of medical terminology and cross sectional anatomy. Also should have an excellent understanding of the clinical indications for an ultrasound exam. Must have basic personal computer skills.

EXPERIENCE:

ARDMS eligibility and ARRT certification preferred

Approved / certified Ultrasound program with potential for RDMS credentialing preferred.
