About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants' New Mexico- Four Corners office is looking for dynamic individuals who are following their passion in delivering the highest-quality project work and who have a strong interest in integrating geophysical and remote sensing archaeological methods into projects. Specifically, we seek an Associate Project Archaeologist - Geophysics to join SWCA's expanding cultural resource management and environmental planning practice. The role is a regular (with benefits), hourly, full-time position based out of our Albuquerque office, but can be filled by a remote employee.

What you will accomplish

  • Help design and conduct fieldwork (geophysical archaeological surveys and mapping)
  • Assist Project Managers and Principal Investigators with cultural resources and geophysical tasks, to implement project logistics, goals, and objectives
  • Help supervise a team of field staff and ensure completion of assigned tasks
  • Coordinate and complete field documentation associated with data collection
  • Prepare field forms and conduct associated data organization tasks and quality assurance review
  • Contribute to technical reports and other work products through completing assigned data processing, analysis, interpretation, graphical outputs, and writing tasks that meet company and professional standards and client/agency requirements
  • Contribute to a supportive and dynamic work environment, collaborating effectively with other Archaeologists, Principal Investigators, Project Managers, and staff in all offices throughout the New Mexico- Four Corners Region and across the company
  • Takes initiative, resolves problems, and creates improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • Collaborate with SWCA personnel across role levels and disciplines.
  • Maintains SWCA's high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance; is motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Take responsibility for team safety, developing safety plans (when applicable), and anticipating potential safety hazards.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • M.A. or M.S. in anthropology of related field
  • Minimum of three (3) years of cultural resources experience, including two (2) years experience with geophysical archaeology
  • Demonstrated experience with near-surface geophysical methods for archaeological applications, including one or more of the following techniques: ground-penetrating radar (GPR), magnetometry, and resistivity
  • Demonstrated experience employing various surveying and mapping techniques and equipment, including GNSS and total stations
  • Basic knowledge of archaeological field and laboratory procedures, including excavation, mapping, photography, and collection and handling of artifacts
  • Basic knowledge of archaeological research issues, principles, and procedures
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to meet SWCA's driver requirements.
  • Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours (sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes) and to carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for fieldwork

Preferred qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of cultural resources experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with processing geophysical data using one or more of the following software programs: RADAN, GPR-SLICE, TerraSurveyor, Surfer, and ArcGIS
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist or eligible to obtain certification
  • Has worked on an interdisciplinary team of scientists and planners.

An employee in this Albuquerque, NM or distributed position can expect a rate of $29.87/hour to $38.11/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
