Minimum Qualifications

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor degree and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination. Other training will be provided as appropriate (i.e.: UGA HazMat training and or pesticide training).
Position Summary
Duties of this position will include maintenance of the lab and green house space, growing and maintaining plants in the green house, breed and making crosses for ornamental research and taking phenotypic data. Breeding goals include making population and taking phenotypic data for specific traits like flower, architecture, etc. The position also includes ordering supplies and managing a molecular biology lab. The personnel will be responsible for nucleic acid extraction and shipping of specimens for sequencing and other analysis. The personnel will also be responsible for keeping the molecular biology and tissue culture lab up to code and conduct routine maintenance of the equipment's in the lab. The personnel will also be responsible for creating documentation of the techniques used in the lab. The personnel will further assist principal investigator and students in the lab with on-going research projects and supervise undergraduate students.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques essential to practical greenhouse management as related to institutional research and instruction needs
  • Ability to plan and direct operations essential to the maintenance of a greenhouse and lab, and direct undergraduates and staff in various greenhouse management operations
  • Knowledge of potting media, techniques used in preparing such media, optimum conditions for a variety of greenhouse plants

  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Lift up to 50lbs, bend and stoop
  • Work is normally performed in a laboratory environment: remaining in normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time
  • Reaching and grasping with extending hands and arm; dexterity with extracting plant material
