College Internship Program

The City of Sterling Heights is seeking innovative and driven individuals for our 2025 College Internship program!

The Program

Our College internship program is designed to provide a challenging and supportive internship experience that has a direct impact on the Sterling Heights community. Interns receive on the job training and day to day responsibilities that not only contribute to the mission and goals of the team they're working with, but also provide a meaningful experience that can be taken into a career after graduation. Learn more about how a local municipality operates, and apply knowledge from your coursework in a real-world setting!

Internships are available across various City Offices & Departments:

• 41-A District Court
• Assessing
• City Clerk
• City Management
• City Development
• Community Relations - Marketing & Broadcasting
• Department of Public Works
• Engineering
• Finance
• Fire Administration
• Human Resources
• Information Technology
• Parks & Recreation
• Planning
• Police Department

As you complete your application, you'll have the opportunity to indicate the specific internship opportunity that interests you. Our upcoming internship program will launch in May of 2025 and interns are expected to commit to an internship lasting 6 months to a year and beyond. Weekly hours of work will vary by department & internship opportunity, ranging from 15-30 hours per week. The hourly rate of pay is $16.00.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a graduate degree in a related field at an accredited College/University; undergraduate students in their senior year may also be considered
• Coursework relevant to desired internship field
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

The Process

• Candidates will be provided the opportunity to apply starting Wednesday, January 15th, 2025.
• The Sterling Heights team will begin reviewing applications and candidate information/preferences after Friday, February 28th, 2025.
• Candidates will be considered for available internship opportunities based on their preferences and areas of study.
• Interviews will be held throughout the months of March and April 2025.
• Candidates can expect an update from our HR team regarding the status of their application & next steps as they become available after March 1st.
