Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration, the incumbent has the responsibility to partner with many stakeholders in a highly matrixed setting to enable the school to develop business plans, strategy, proformas, and proposals to support the educational programs and clinical enterprise of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. The incumbent will work closely with the school's senior leadership team, Director of Academic Program Development, SON Finance and Administration partners, Philanthropy, UCDH and UCD central offices, UCOP, and external constituents to develop the business, operational, and financial strategies for new SON ventures. Manage the school's strategic investment and endowment portfolios (including funds functioning as endowments). A key responsibility will be to collaborate with the Director of ASINC to expand the portfolio of academic programs. A specific emphasis area for business development is to determine a business strategy forward for the school's clinical practice enterprise. Additionally, this position will serve as a dyad partner to leadership to ensure coordination between development, launch, implementation, reporting, and assessment and evaluation of business performance, strategic investment portfolio, and endowment portfolio.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Finance or related field.
  • Proven experience (5 years) in business strategy development, strategic planning, or related roles.
  • Experience with strategic planning tools and methodologies such as SWOT analysis, Gap analysis, SMART goal setting, Objectives and Key results (OKRs), scenario planning, Balanced Scorecard, RACI, Gantt charts, and/or Strategic Planning Canvas or similar tools and methodologies.
  • Ability to implement programs within a matrix organization to leverage existing resources and maximize efficiency of services.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop business models.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, trends, and market insights.
  • Excellent project management skills, including planning, execution, and monitoring.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly.
  • Leadership abilities to inspire and guide cross-functional teams towards common goals.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with a focus on driving results.
  • Knowledge of higher education best practices and emerging trends in business strategy development.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, adapting to change and driving innovation.
  • Demonstrated skill to represent UC Davis with high-level federal and state government officials and executives from external organizations. In addition to these leaders, interactions with faculty, administrative and clinical staff, Health system executive staff, and campus leadership require excellent communication skills, political acumen, sensitivity, and tact.
  • Ability to convey complex organizational and planning issues to executives, staff and faculty to engage in strategic planning/thinking.
  • Ability to exercise exemplary excellent judgement and diplomacy as well as decision-making regarding when and how to escalate issue to effectively solve novel challenges.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and legal information.
  • Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree (MHA, MPH, MBA) or advanced degree in a related area.
  • Experience working within the University of California or in higher education / similar complex organization or industry.
  • Proven experience (10 years) in business strategy development, strategic planning, or related roles.
  • Knowledge of UC and UC Davis policy, procedures and practices.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
