DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Birch Aquarium at Scripps aquarium.ucsd.edu is a non-profit exploration center for Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The aquarium showcases over 60 habitats of fish and invertebrates. The interactive museum features research discoveries by Scripps scientists and engages visitors of all ages.

Our goal is to promote conservation efforts that protect our ocean planet. We educate visitors on how our world works and inspire them to become stewards of the planet. Our conservation efforts are based on scientific research, and we aim to connect people with nature and with a shared sense of responsibility to care for our planet Earth.

Location: 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla, CA 92037.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Exhibits Maintenance Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the optimal functioning, cleanliness, and safety of all exhibits, displays, and galleries within the facility. This role involves maintaining exhibits with diverse components, including mechanical, electronic, audio/visual, and digital technology. The Coordinator proactively addresses exhibit deterioration, coordinating repairs with internal teams, UC San Diego entities, and external vendors. Additionally, the position involves overseeing and managing the schedules of student Exhibits Assistants, maintaining inventory, and procuring materials. In the realm of exhibits development, fabrication, and installation, the Coordinator contributes to graphic panel fabrication, assists with training Exhibits Assistants, and conducts research on ideas and materials for new exhibit design. Moreover, the role includes establishing and maintaining systems for tracking maintenance, expenses, and purchasing, producing manuals, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations, such as maintaining Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all materials used. This multifaceted role is integral to the seamless functioning and ongoing development of exhibits throughout the facility.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) years experience maintaining and fabricating exhibits in a museum, science center, or related industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan for routine maintenance of exhibits and components.

  • Excellent research and analysis skills for exhibit materials, maintenance, repair, and fabrication.

  • Familiarity with new technologies relevant to exhibits. Demonstrated ability to make recommendations for acquisition of new technologies for exhibits.

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate various computer and audio/visual hardware and software for exhibits.

  • Experience producing specifications for and supervising contract services including exhibit fabrication, machinists, contractors, media production, etc.

  • Experience working with contractors and vendors.

  • Demonstrated ability to assign and direct activities of others, including student staff.

  • Proven ability to initiate, self-motivate and work independently; ability to work under pressure.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize. Proven ability to be organized and meet deadlines and to produce accurate records.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow all safety precautions for equipment and procedures while working on the job.

  • Experience in safe and proper use of hand and power tools.

  • Experience with Macintosh computers. Skilled in the use of relevant hardware and software.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work a schedule that includes a weekend day, and occasional evenings and additional hours as needed.

  • Valid drivers license to operate University vehicles preferred.

Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) training will be required. Must meet CANRA compliance requirements per the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act ("CANRA," Penal Code sections 11164-11174.4).

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $45,101 - $53,035 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.60 - $25.40

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
