DESCRIPTION

Named for civil rights lawyer and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and inspired by his contributions to building a more just society, Thurgood Marshall College at UC San Diego is dedicated to supporting undergraduate students from all majors to become engaged citizens who are committed to serving society. Our residence halls and apartment communities represent the grassroots history of our college in their house names, utilize restorative practices/justice to build community, and house large communities of underrepresented minoritized students, including significant populations of Native, Black, and Latinx students. The College's programs and partnerships demonstrate our commitment to diversity, as shown through our exchange programs with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the Public Service minor, our Partnerships Schools Program with Gompers Preparatory Academy and the Preuss School, our work with the OASIS Summer Bridge Program, the Kumeyaay Native Garden, and striking art pieces throughout Marshall College: the Sojourner Truth statue, the Chicano Legacy Mural, and a community-based mural in our residential community.

Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life, the Assistant Director of Residence Life (ADRL) coordinates significant portions of the residential life program. The ADRL plays an integral role in implementing the residential life program as it relates to creating a safe and secure living learning environment, which supports students' personal, educational, social, and professional development and is supportive of the college's educational vision.

The Marshall College residential community houses approximately 2,450 undergraduate students who reside in apartments of 8-10 residents each. The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life, four Assistant Directors, and 50 undergraduate paraprofessional staff live in the Marshall College housing complex. The Residential Life office strives to build a positive and safe living-learning environment in which students can grow and develop as scholars and citizens. The staff provide programs and services that support the academic mission of the University by enhancing the educational, personal, cultural, and social development of students.

The ADRL co-supervises the Resident Assistant program with the other ADRLs, consisting of 50 total student staff, and includes coordinating the selection process, planning comprehensive trainings and retreats, and providing work direction through weekly meetings and annual evaluations. The ADRL advises the residential programming board to implement comprehensive programming models that reflect the UC San Diego Principles of Community and the college's educational philosophy and mission. The ADRL manages a portion of the residential programming budget. The ADRL collaborates with college and university officials and departments regarding student crises. In addition, the ADRL provides counseling and conflict mediation, as well as enforces university policy and resolves conduct issues. The ADRL position requires high levels of, and demonstrated education and experience in, working independently, implementing organizational goals, understanding college student development, and making decisions that impact individual residents, office administration and crisis response.

As an active member of the Marshall Student Affairs staff, the ADRL will attend staff meetings and training sessions as well as support College projects and events. This position represents Marshall College at weekly Council of Assistant Director of Residential Life meetings and works collaboratively with colleagues in Residential, Retail, & Supply Chain Services (RRSS). Frequent evenings & weekend hours as required by assigned duty rotation and residential student programming.

Must live in university provided housing and agree to UC San Diego Residential Living Agreement. Must be available for on-call emergency response including evenings, weekends, holidays, and University closures. Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays, and University closures.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Live-in residential experience in a university or college environment.

  • Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Able to assess and mediate individual and group conflicts with basic counseling, including but not limited to listening, reflecting and summarizing skills.

  • Demonstrated skill in handling crises and emergency situations involving student welfare and safety.

  • Skilled in selecting, training, providing work direction, and evaluating student staff. This includes collaborating to set performance goals and conducting performance appraisals.

  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization. Skilled in applying student development theory in leadership training to demonstrate the UCSD Principles of Community. Ability to apply professional approaches to solve problems and organize programs and projects, including, but not limited to motivating students.

  • Strong knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.

  • Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills. Skilled in problem solving and decision making that represents the best interest of the college, Housing, Dining & Hospitality services, Student Affairs, and students. Skilled to manage a broad range of student services within the residential life community and knowledgeable of university services and resources.

  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

  • Skilled in communicating effectively with individuals and in groups through in-depth cross-cultural understanding and equity-minded education.

  • Ability to work cooperatively, effectively and efficiently with students and other professionals.

  • Skilled in organizing and prioritizing workload while working independently and with minimal supervision.

  • Skilled in programming methods and marketing strategies.

  • Ability to manage budgets for programming initiatives. Knowledgeable of department funding sources, and budgetary policies and procedures.

  • Ability to develop, interpret and apply university policies, regulations and procedures in consultation with higher level professionals and/or management.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and interact in sensitive situations in a professional manner.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,600 - $100,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.07 - $48.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
