Job Summary

The Chief of Staff position is a key and highly visible member of the Dean's executive staff. Under general supervision of the Dean, manages complex, varied and/or cross functional projects and initiatives, and provides assistance on matters that are sensitive or complex in nature and requires a high level of analytical skill, independence and initiative in execution and implementation. Advises the Dean and coordinates with other senior SON officials on matters of interest to the Dean including strategic planning, policy, programs, personnel, and priorities. May represent the Dean in discussions with other Deans, Associate Deans and Associate Vice Chancellors, Chairs and the Office of the Provost. Works closely with senior university administrators, campus departments, advisory boards, community leaders, governmental ocials, donors, and various campus committees to assist with the Dean's initiatives. Interacts regularly with Legal, Compliance and Public Affairs and Marketing. Oversees marketing and communications functions for the School. Assists with the management of the Dean's communication including communicating and consulting with the Dean on internal and external administrative and policy matters requiring action and facilitates their execution for resolution. Centrally coordinates the Dean's activities (operations and planning) and for ensures timely flow of information to and from the Dean's Office.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or a combination of experience/education
  • Experience and skills in short and long-range organizational strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated extensive project management experience.
  • Experience in a senior role to design and implement organizational and strategic communications plans that incorporate a clear definition of goals, target audiences, and strategies that include promotional activities, community and public relations, and media relations' efforts that are in-line with institutional goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact diplomatically with diverse personalities and to exercise judgment and tact in interactions with faculty, staff, students, and the public.Thorough understanding of the Dean's Office mission and the sensitive nature of the office.
  • Proven strong political acumen skills and ability to apply in a diverse, complex organization.
  • Proven ability to apply high ethical standards to business practices and decision-making.
  • Proven ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential issues that require independent judgment and strict discretion, and maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive, confidential and/or privileged information.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, analyze, and interpret complex written material and financial data, and effectively communicate results of analyses.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior officials and executives from within and outside the University, and ability to think strategically and serve as a sounding board for executive managers.
  • Strong ability to develop and maintain relationships with a broad range of faculty, staff, students, and the SON community.
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Competence with standard office software and university enterprise systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D, JD, MBA, MHA or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience in a large, complex, integrated organization in a university setting is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of the operational and long-range goals and policies of the University of California.

Work Environment
