Job Summary

The Lab Research Supervisor 2 position will serve as the Laboratory Manager for the Stem Cell Program Translational Lab, will supervise lab staff, all undergrad, graduate students and post-docs and oversee the procurement and maintenance of lab supplies, materials, and equipment required for qualified researchers to incorporate current and novel techniques to ensure the Translational Lab will meet all state and federal laws and guidelines for UC Davis investigators and many collaborators. The Lab Manager Supervisor will assist with complex laboratory research projects in collaboration with academic faculty and industry partners. The position is a working Lab Manager Supervisor who will assist with manufacturing, packaging, and distributing vectors working toward treatments for multiple diseases, for the investigators served through the Stem Cell Program Vector Core. The Lab Manager will also assist the Stem Cell Program Alpha Stem Cell Clinic with the post-processing of clinical samples as needed for ongoing clinical trials. The Lab Manager is required to interact with all regulatory bodies and ensure that the lab is operating with full compliance with State and Federal regulations. Involves conducting or supporting laboratory research, which may include routine or non-routine laboratory operations, data interpretation, development and performance of technical protocols and procedures, design of experiments, literature studies, and preparation of scientific papers.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences or related field.
  • Previous lab management experience.
  • Experience following basic and appropriate lab safety procedures, organizing data, monitoring and ordering lab supplies to ensure there is appropriate inventory.
  • Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or instructional / experimental design).
  • Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.
  • Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Solid leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities, scheduling instructional space, and ensuring completion of multiple projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
  • Solid knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise all levels of staff.
  • Strong abilities to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.
  • Advanced knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of UCD Supervisor Certificate Series.
  • Master's degree in Stem Cell Biology or related field.
  • 5+ Years lab management experience.
  • 2+ Years cell/Tissue culture experience.
  • 2+ Years asset management experience.
  • 2+ Years practical experience with immune deficient mice.
  • Experience in stem cell or cellular therapy research.
  • Technical reporting, data reliability, interpretation, and documentation.
  • Knowledge of University and Federal Policies and Procedures in all areas applicable to Stem Cell and general laboratory operations.

Department Overview

The Stem Cell Program consisting of 60-100 individuals including Faculty, staff, Supervisors, Managers, students (undergrad, graduate, Clinical Fellows), is a state of the art basic and translational science and research program. The Lab Manager Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the entire make-up of the Stem Cell Program which includes the IRC Vivarium, GMP, Alpha Clinic, UCBCP, Gene Therapy Center, as well as the Translational Lab. In addition, there are collaborators from other departments within UC Davis and other academic centers, and Corporate Sponsors; all of which are committed to finding treatments and cures for debilitating diseases and injuries using human stem cells, CAR-T cells, iPSC, as well as gene therapies. The Lab Manager Supervisor for the Stem Cell Program Translational Lab will provide lab management support in line with the goals of all individuals who work with or are in this program and serve the large and complex laboratory group, assist with the development/execution of multi-disciplinary projects, and perform state-of-the-art complex research projects in collaboration with the investigators and clients that come through the Stem Cell Program. This position is integral to future program projects, disease team grant funding, and to the success of the Stem Cell Program in finding novel treatments to save the lives of patients with currently incurable diseases.
