POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) is a member of the senior leadership team who will work closely with leaders across the JHM enterprise to shape the organization's culture to be one that values diversity and inclusion and lives out its values in the delivery of excellence across our tripartite mission of teaching, research and clinical care." The core responsibility of this key executive is to ensure accountability and visible commitment of diversity and inclusion programs/initiatives through the development, implementation and achievement of performance metrics across the institution for all members of the JHM enterprise: executive leadership, faculty, fellows, students, and staff. The Chief Diversity Officer will work closely with senior executives on related councils, the JHM CEO/Dean of the SOM, the President of JHHS and JHM community.

The Chief Diversity Officer will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Health System, which have been successful in recent years in deepening our commitment to diversity. Of increasing importance is the alignment of all diversity efforts with the JHM strategic plan.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The Chief Diversity Officer reports directly to the JHM Senior Vice President /CHRO, collaborates and is accountable to the JHM CEO/ Dean of the School of Medicine and President JHHS, Executive Vice President, JHM to achieve a comprehensive diversity and equity agenda for the enterprise.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES




  1. Develop a strategy for implementing the work of transforming the JHM culture through education and accountability that supports improved academic excellence and diversity and inclusion at all levels of the organization.
  2. Collaborates with exec leadership of both SOM, JHHS & JHU leaders regarding initiatives designed to support diversity efforts.
  3. Collaborates closely with JHU DEI CDO to ensure that both University and SOM diversity agendas align.
  4. Work with units/departments to assist in the collection, analysis, and dissemination of relevant data, as well as in the design and preparation of protocols to effectively monitor, analyze and benchmark institutional progress.
  5. Serve as a consultant to units across JHM and work to create, expand, and implement employee/workplace programs in collaboration with JHU/JHHS Human Resources.
  6. Work with communications officers and provide oversight for the diversity and inclusion website that assists in communicating relevant information to both internal and external communities.
  7. Lead and serve as the primary subject matter expert on JHM diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  8. Provide vision, leadership, coordination and strategic planning for a JHM-wide platform to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion for all members of the enterprise.
  9. Advises and partners with senior leaders and organization representatives across JHM in the development of diversity goals, policies, practices, and programs to meet strategic objectives.
  10. Serve as a resource and advocate for faculty, fellows, students, staff and other constituencies with regard to issues such as recruiting efforts, campus culture, and sensitivity awareness.
  11. Consult with the Vice Dean for Education on curricular development to address issues of diversity and inclusion for student learners (i.e. global and international issues, health care disparity, multi-cultural concerns, points of access for faculty/fellows/students from different groups and learning styles).
  12. Provide oversight and guidance to pipeline programs which collectively serve underrepresented minorities and/or students of under-privileged backgrounds from secondary school through post baccalaureate studies.
  13. Collaborates with Talent Acquisition in recruiting activities to ensure the appropriate outreach to and recruitment of minorities into the workforce.
  14. Train staff in the concept of cultural humility to develop self-awareness and a respectful attitude toward diverse points of view.
  15. Consult with operational leaders to ensure a hospital environment is inclusive of all patients. Ensure that navigational (i.e., multi-lingual) signage can be easily understood by the patient population.



EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS




  1. Master's degree or other applied advanced degrees are preferred.
  2. Prior experience working in an academic medical center or teaching hospital is highly preferred.
  3. A minimum of ten (10) years of experience leading and advancing diversity and cultural inclusion strategic plan at an executive level is required.
  4. Possess experience with data collection/analyses and research methods, as well as a track record working with faculty, academic, and administrative leaders is crucial.
  5. Proven abilities to collaborate and work successfully with multiple constituents in the delivery and coordination of programs and initiatives.
  6. Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and have the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative environment.
  7. Possess extensive experience in the field of diversity and the ability to translate expertise into highly effective practical applications.
  8. Proven experience in meeting the specific needs of populations chronically underrepresented in higher education and health care and a demonstrated history of effective community service.
  9. Successful record of leading and advancing diversity and cultural inclusion initiatives
  10. Must have a high degree of cultural intelligence and technical mastery of diversity and inclusion strategy in academic medicine or related industry
  11. Possess an entrepreneurial spirit.
  12. Ability to successfully navigate the hierarchy, tradition, competitiveness and culture of academic medicine". Demonstrated sensitivity and diplomacy.
