Position Overview
The Dean's Office in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Kansas is seeking candidates for Chairperson of the Department of History.

This position is open to KU faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences only.

The chairperson provides leadership and oversight for all department activities, sets an example of successful pedagogy and scholarly activity, and takes an active role in strengthening impact and belonging among the department's students, staff, and faculty.

This position reports to an Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and serves at the pleasure of the Executive Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Job Description

Chairperson Responsibilities (50%):

  • Provide oversight and leadership for all unit activities.
  • Administer the undergraduate and graduate academic programs of the unit.
  • Review and, where appropriate, modify long-range planning for the unit.
  • Oversee all internal budgetary, administrative, and personnel matters.
  • Supervise and review the unit's faculty and professional, academic, and University support staff.
  • Seek enhancement of all unit resources by actively seeking external funding.
  • Develop and enhance research and educational relationships between the unit and other units across the College and University, as well as with agencies outside the University, governmental, public, or private.
  • Develop long-term planning for future leadership by cultivating/mentoring junior and mid-career faculty members.
  • Execute College and University policy in the unit effectively.
  • Represent the unit and report to CLAS, and represent the unit to other University entities.

Faculty Responsibilities (50%):

  • 20% Teaching
    • Teach courses in field of specialty.
    • Advise students, including student mentoring and providing directed readings.
    • Supervise graduate teaching assistants, as assigned.
    • Serve on committees that supervise and evaluate student progress.
  • 20% Research
    • Engage in scholarly research, including publishing appropriate peer-reviewed books and articles and presenting papers at professional conferences on a regular basis.
  • 10% Service
    • Provide general service to one's home unit, the College, the University, the state, and to the profession.

Required Qualifications
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application and (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in c.v.:
  1. Tenured appointment with the rank of Full Professor in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
  2. Experience serving as an academic leader and team builder, developing and enhancing research and educational relationships among faculty, alumni and its affiliated units.
  3. Teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and commitment to teaching excellence as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Record of scholarly achievement, as evidenced by an established program of research with the promise of continued productivity.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively and to manage interpersonal relations.
  6. Experience in promoting access and belonging among the department's students, staff, and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Appointment in the Department of History.
  2. Excellence in administrative and management skills.
  3. Commitment to interdisciplinary and international studies in teaching, research, and service.
  4. Experience with KU and KUCR administrative procedures.
  5. Experience in seeking outside funding and managing multiple projects.
