Assistant Professor-Nurse Anesthesia

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Associate Professor of Nurse Anesthesia assumes a leadership role in the program and courses of which they are teaching; demonstrates teaching excellence; participates in recognized activities of scholarship; participates in service within the College and in the community; and is a member of a professional organization. Assumes a leadership role in the systematic evaluation of the program and accreditation activities. Demonstrates implementation of the mission, vision, goals and values of the College as well as the philosophy of the division in which he/she is assigned.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Applies College values and philosophy in work activities and interactions with others.

3. *Leads classroom and clinical/lab activities while adhering to College policies.

4. *Maintains currency of course content/materials by planning, delivering, assessing, evaluating and systematically updating all assigned courses.

5. *Manages the education environment to facilitate optimal learning while utilizing instructional methods that promote critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, understanding of evidence based practice, and lifelong learning.

6. *Participates in scholarship through a leadership role in scholarship creation; dissemination by podium, poster or manuscript; or through evidenced based practice.

7. Attends conferences, workshops and inservices on teaching methods and/or the nurse anesthesiology profession.

8. Participates in professional development through relevant workshops offered by the educational development team.

9. *Provides clinical anesthesia as assigned.

10. *Guides doctoral students in the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) project proposal, implementation, presentation and writing.

11. Serves on a minimum of one faculty committee(s) and pursues an officer role for a committee.

12. Assists with DNAP program and College activities including those related to accreditation processes and procedures and evaluation of the program and College.

13. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

14. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of advanced theoretical and primary sciences as they apply to the practice of nurse anesthesiology.

2. Knowledge of current anesthesiology practices and techniques.

3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

4. Skill in theory and clinical/lab teaching skills.

5. Ability to apply adult education principles to both didactic and clinical teaching in the nurse anesthesia educational program.

6. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments including diverse patient populations.

8. Ability to mentor, advise and evaluate student attainment of objectives.

9. Ability to effectively react and perform work under stressful situations.

10. Ability to balance and prioritize diverse teaching, simulation and clinical responsibilities.

11. Ability to problem solve and perform critical thinking.

12. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

13. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Doctoral degree required. Minimum of three (3) year clinical experience in nurse anesthesia practice required. A minimum of five (5) years experience in academic teaching required.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in the State of Nebraska required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)
