POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides Boston Medical Center with competent legal counsel and services to protect the legal rights of the corporation and ensure that its affairs are managed in accordance with hospital policy and within the necessary legal limits prescribed by law.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Successful completion of a program of study (L.L.B. or J.D.) at an accredited school of law.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Must have been admitted to and be a member in good standing of the state bar (the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers), or eligible to be admitted

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 3 years (post-bar) of varied legal experience is required. Emphasis on healthcare research-related issues preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:


  • Knowledge of federal and state law and regulations applicable to a healthcare environment, and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of healthcare research, including FDA, DHHS, MDPH, NIH, and the current regulatory environment; legal and procedural practices; and office and supervisory practices and procedures at a level generally acquired through varied legal experience with an emphasis on healthcare research-related issues.
  • Analytical ability to provide legal services and advice over a wide variety of legal issues; draft legal documents; negotiate contracts and settlements; and determine appropriateness of appealing administrative decisions.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to provide a leadership role in ensuring the provision of legal counsel; maintain an effective working relationship with corporate-wide contacts, including senior managers and physicians; effectively communicate with all levels of employees; establish and maintain effective working relationships with outside lawyers; and instruct employees on various legal issues.
