The Berkeley Lab is hiring an Electrical Engineering Student Intern to support the ALS-U engineering team. This part-time position (up to 20 hours/week) offers hands-on experience in upgrading the Advanced Light Source (ALS), a world-leading scientific facility. Student Interns will assist with electrical CAD drawings, installation work instructions, material handling, and kitting. On-site presence is required, with ample training opportunities on LBNL's engineering tools.

What You Will Do:

The student's tasks will vary based on skills and interests. Those interested in technical documentation, QA, and manufacturing processes will focus on creating Work Instructions and Test Plans. Students with a CAD and design focus will work on 3D modeling, design, and creating manufacturing drawings. Training in LBNL-specific engineering tools will be provided.



  • 3D modeling and design using Creo Parametric CAD
  • Converting 3D models to 2D engineering drawings
  • Assisting with assembly and as-built documentation
  • Developing QA documents (Work Instructions, Test Plans)
  • Extracting images from mechanical models for documentation
  • Contributing to project and engineering work process documentation



What is Required:



  • Full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing during the semester enrolled in an engineering program or similar technical program.
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Doc platform
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to make clear presentations
  • Familiarity/proficiency with mechanical CAD modeling (experience with mechanical CAD models preferred)
  • Programming experience



Desired Qualifications:



  • Technical writing experience
  • Experience with mechanical CAD models



Notes:



  • This is a part-time, 6-month, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • The hourly range for this position is $18.67 - $24.39. The final hourly rate is dependent on years of education completed. Applicants should note that they are responsible for covering their own housing and travel expenses.
  • This position may be subject to a background check.
  • As a condition of employment, the finalist will be required to disclose if they are subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct, are currently being investigated for misconduct, left a position during an investigation for alleged misconduct, or have filed an appeal with a previous employer.
