DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will assist the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation's design team by offering design and drafting assistance for projects related to abandoned mine lands. Your responsibilities will include aiding project designers in gathering field data, which encompasses sampling water, mine spoil, and coal refuse, as well as measuring pipes, culverts, and stream flows. You will apply various engineering principles, including those from mining engineering, geology, mine design, surveying, hydraulics, soils engineering, and civil engineering.

This knowledge will be essential in assisting the design staff to identify appropriate design methodologies and perform necessary calculations to address issues associated with abandoned mine lands. The integration of your technical skills and field data collection will play a crucial role in the development of sustainable solutions for these environmental concerns.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time internship that will run from 5/1/2025 through 8/29/2025
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time on a schedule that aligns with the supervisor. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Ebensburg.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor's degree or advanced degree program in one of the following majors:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Environmental Engineering
  • An approved major course of study at an accredited college or university
  • In good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher)
  • Must have completed Freshman year
  • Pennsylvania residency or enrollment of a Pennsylvania college or university

  • Additional Requirements:
    • Must possess a valid driver's license that is not under suspension.
    • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
