KRMC Perioperative Assistant-St Pathway Program

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Provides direct and indirect patient care as determined/delegated by the OR Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager or Anesthesia providers. Assists with tasks necessary for the general management and organization of the nursing unit or Anesthesia services, based upon meeting patient or unit needs.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Transports patient as assigned.

3. *Transfers and/or properly positions patients as assigned.

4. *Selects and prepares procedural surgical supplies and equipment per protocols.

5. *Assists other surgical personnel with skin preparations.

6. *Performs surgical preps as ordered by physician.

7. *Provides assistance during surgery by retracting, sponging and cutting sutures performing in the second scrub role.

8. *Transports blood products, specimens, supplies and equipment.

9. *Cleans operating rooms, scrub rooms, anesthesia equipment and workroom, operating room equipment and storage rooms.

10. *Assists with room set up as directed including opening sterile packages and gathering equipment and supplies.

11. Stocks Operating Rooms per protocol.

12. Reacts to emergency situations promptly and according to departmental and facility protocols and procedures.

13. Assists other interdisciplinary members with providing patient care or anesthesia supplies and equipment as appropriate.

14. *Delivers medications (drugs or biologicals) received in the surgical suite to the appropriate operating room via case cart or medication cart; delivers anesthesia medications as needed.

15. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

16. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

17. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.

2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Knowledge of surgical preparations activities, equipment and supplies.

4. Knowledge of anesthesia equipment and supplies.

5. Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.

6. Ability to respond promptly and effectively to emergent situations.

7. Ability to effectively interact with coworkers, patients and physicians.

8. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

9. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

10. Ability to practice proper body mechanics to ensure personal and customer/patient safety.

11. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

12. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalency required. Prior experience in a medical or operating room environment preferred. Accepted and enrolled in pre-requisite coursework to meet requirements for the surgical technologist accredited program required. Pre-requisite coursework completed with 1 year prior to acceptance into the surgical technologist accredited program required. Must remain in good standing during coursework completion.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Per manager's discretion - Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) - Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
