Overview
The mentor is responsible for working with student - athletes who are experiencing academic difficulties and/or have newly matriculated to Utah State University. The mentor's role is to serve as a supportive resource for student-athletes and provide them with tools and resources to help them mitigate their identified challenges. Mentoring helps student-athletes learn fundamental academic success skills that can help them become more effective at self-regulating their own learning.

Responsibilities
Depending on the skill development needs of each student-athlete, mentoring sessions may include:
  • Identification of learning styles
  • Practicing self and time management skills
  • Academic planning of assignments, quizzes, exams, etc.
  • Using a syllabus planner
  • Reading comprehension/text annotating
  • Test taking strategies/overcoming test anxiety
  • Communication skills with faculty
  • Goal Setting
  • Information Literacy
  • Utilizing Academic Success Resources

Mentoring sessions do not include:
  • Subject tutoring
  • Personal Counseling
  • Course Advisement/ Eligibility


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • External university candidates must have a bachelor's degree
  • Must be ethical, responsible, and professional
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Junior, senior, or graduate student (students in social work, clinical psychology, counseling, education, family, consumer, human development preferred)
  • External university candidates in social work, clinical psychology, counseling, education, family, consumer, human development, or related fields preferred
  • Experience working one-on-one with individuals (preference for those who work or have experience working with students/persons from underrepresented communities)
  • Experience as a tutor, teacher, educator, or interest in pursuing a career in human services preferred but not required
